The young trans woman who publicly announced her intent to break Florida Law and was unsurprisingly arrested in a Florida State Capitol restroom about 3 weeks ago for... breaking the law. She spent the night in the men's ward of the local jail.
She has since said that it was 'probably wrong' to do that with such stated public intent.
Her actions put an unwanted and undeserved spotlight on those of us who just want to live freely, openly, and honestly. She gained a few minutes of national fame, but at what cost? Was anything accomplished by her actions? We already know that Ron(da) Santis is a crazy nutcase about sexual and gender minorities. We already know that Florida is not a welcoming place for those minorities, especially transgender Americans.
Yes! Her action put Florida back in the spotlight for its legalized bigotry and chauvinism, for its willingness to trample the rights of a minority to satisfy misinformed people. But her action also caused anger in her own community among some of those who must live in Florida while she gets to run off to her home in another state.
Trans Floridians must now be extra cautious because of the unwanted spotlight put on them. But it goes further than that too. Let's say you are a tall woman. Someone taller than the stereotypical woman. What do you think could happen to them when they need to use a public restroom? Oh Wait! That already happened in Lake City Florida after the Marcy incident at the Capitol. Dani Davis was fired from the Walmart she worked at in Lake City because she reported a male customer who yelled repeated at her as she (a biological female) used the restroom. He called her all the trans names he could think of, but she's not transgender.
Yes, we feel we need to do something, but we must think of the bigger picture before we act. What are the possible repercussions of my selfish act on the rest of the community?
